Yé-yé

Since I watched Léon I've been getting into french cinema, as you'll probably start seeing in the Movies section in the next few days.

I've always been curious about these slow and melancholic songs with female vocals in french that sometimes come up in media, so watching these old french movies where those songs are basically the entire soundtrack made me finally research that kind of music properly.

I'm still learning, but from what I can tell so far, it's not a genre of music, but a subset of songs from a french genre from the 1960s called yé-yé. These songs are usually more lighthearted and upbeat, but the ones I like the most are the more slower, sadder songs.

I haven't listened to a lot yet, but my favourite song so far has to be Un Jour Comme Un Autre by Brigitte Bardot. Check out Françoise Hardy, Sylvie Vartan and Jane Birkin too.

Brigitte Bardot has said some really racist and sexist things so please don't take this as endorsement, I just really like her music.

P.S. Listening to this much french these last few days, I've been realizing that it's really a beautiful language. I used to think it sounded ugly, but at the same time, I've always found french girls' way of speaking really cute, so idk. Sorry french people for judging too harshly ig lol.
